Nov 1. 7 Defence welcomes all expressions of public support for our people deployed on operations overseas. The most effective way for you to show your support is to send an e mail message to the troops. These messages of support are circulated widely to Australian personnel. Defence will continue to provide a system for the public to send care parcels to our deployed personnel for Christmas 2. Rather than sending a parcel we encourage you to consider making a lasting contribution to Defence personnel and their families by donating to the RSL, Legacy or other charities. There is no change to existing Defence subsidised postal arrangements for family and friends to send mail and parcels to their deployed loved ones and mates. The RSL Australian Forces Overseas Fund prepares care packages that are dispatched twice yearly to Defence personnel deployed on operations. These care packs contain various non perishable items, a letter of appreciation on behalf of all Australians and RSL Membership contact details. Importantly, these packs are professionally prepared and meet all Defence and host nation transport and import requirements. Donations to the RSL Australian Forces Overseas Fund can be made online. Donations over 2 are tax deductible and every donation is individually acknowledged by the RSL. For members of the public who still wish to send general care parcels to deployed personnel over the Christmas 2. Australian Forces Post Office address below will be open from Monday 6 November to Friday 8 December 2. An Australian Defence Member AFPO 6. Australian Defence Force NSW 2. In order to ensure an equitable distribution of parcels it is requested that donations are gender neutral, and addressed to An Australian Defence Member, not to a specific job title, trade or unit member. Unfortunately Defence can not accept care packages for Military Working Dogs or Explosive Detection Dogs due to strict care requirements relating to both their diet and their training programs. To ensure that all items are able to be delivered to our deployed forces, donors are asked to ensure that packages contain non perishable goods only. Previous experience has shown that items that are not robustly packaged can break open during transit, which can lead to infestation and spoilage of perishable goods. All items must be submitted to an Australia Post outlet by the cut off date of Friday 8 December 2. Please ensure that parcels do not contain alcohol, pornography or culturally offensive inappropriate written material. Please note that general care parcels received by Defence after Friday 8 December 2. Australian charities such as the Salvation Army. Full details at link Department of Defence. Next steps of Australian Singapore military training initiative implementation 3. Nov 1. 72. 9 Nov 1. Following consultation with the local community, businesses, representative groups and landholders, the Department of Defence today confirmed the Shoalwater Bay Training Area will be expanded and Defence will seek to develop an alternative site in the vicinity of Townsville as part of the Australia Singapore Military training Initiative. Land will only be purchased from willing sellers in accordance with the Minister for Defence, Senator the Hon Marise Paynes statement on 7 February 2. Following the consideration of community feedback, Defence will seek to purchase land from willing sellers at one alternate site near either Greenvale, Ravenswood or Pentland. Defence will not expand the existing Townsville Field Training Area to support this Initiative. Based on initial assessments, a training area near Greenvale would best meet the Australian Defence Forces ADF and Singapore Armed Forces requirements, both now and into the future. Defence will conduct due diligence and further engagement with willing sellers near Greenvale. Sites near Ravenswood and Pentland will be considered should Greenvale prove not to be feasible. The Government will seek to purchase land from willing sellers around Shoalwater Bay. Defence will also commence detailed construction design work for facilities and infrastructure. Construction will occur at both locations in parallel from 2. The delivery of enhanced training areas in Central and North Queensland will benefit the ADFs training capacity, as well as Australias bilateral defence relationship with Singapore. It is part of the Governments commitment to creating strong and enduring economic opportunities for local communities and businesses. Defence will host community walk in sessions and industry engagement briefings in the local areas in the near future. Defence News and Media. Traveling the streets of Kabul can be daunting, however Australian troops serving in the city have their own dedicated protection force of angles and armour to keep the risk manageable. The soldiers of Force Protection Element 8 FPE 8 and their protected vehicles have the job of moving people safely around town where they then maintain an overwatch role while specialist personnel undertake their work. The team is based on 3. RARs B Company and consists of about 1. Australian advisors and mentors working for the NATO mission in Afghanistan. On the way to a task, you might be taken in an up armoured 4. WD or a Bushmaster Protected Mobility Vehicle PMV driven by an infantryman like Private Javier Batlle. Kabul is like any major city, the traffic can be pretty full on, he said. People tend to let us through places first though, they think of us as being a small tank so people generally get out of the way. No one really tries to take on a 1. PMV. Private Batlle and his fellow drivers are trained in tactical driving to deal with other cars, however often it is people on foot that can be the danger. You have to watch out for people getting out in front of you as pedestrians tend to have right of way in their culture, he said. Passengers in the back of a Bushmaster dont enjoy the best view, but the crew have a 3. When you first drive in Kabul you have to take it easy, Private Batlle said. Other cars will always try to creep up on the inside as youre turning. They sometimes dont appreciate how big and bulky a PMV is and what it could do to a normal car. Once you arrive in location, a guardian angel like Lance Corporal Mark Schure will keep an eye out for threats while you go about your business. You have to stay on the ball all the time, its that moment of compliancy where things can go wrong, he said. You can do a four hour stint and nothing happens, but you have to make sure youre always ready to deal with anything. The guardian angels will be with you when youre working outside at an Afghan base or in a meeting. Youre constantly scanning the room, LCpl Schure said. You have a plan if you have to get out of a building quickly. Youre thinking about where your mentor is, how you would best grab him, and different scenarios. Apart from windows, youre also keeping an eye on apertures like gaps in the walls. Major Sam Thackray, the Officer Commanding FPE 8, said professional standard of his team is well known among the Coalition partners. Were often approached by other nations to get support from our team, he said.
